If I could live my life again

Next time I would try to make more mistakes

I would not try to be so perfect

I would relax more

I would be sillier than I was

In fact, I would take very few things seriously

I would be less hygienic

I would take more risks

I would take more trips

I’d watch more sunsets

I’d climb more mountains

I’d swim more rivers

I’d go to more places – I’ve never been

I’d have more real problems – and less imaginary ones

I was one of those people who live prudent and prolific lives – each minute of his life

I was one of those who never goes anywhere without a thermometer

without a hot-water bottle

and without an umbrella and without a parachute
If I could live again – I will travel light

If I could live again – I’ll try to work bare feet at the beginning of spring until the end of autumn

I’ll ride more carts

I’ll watch more sunrises and play with more children

If I have the life to live – but now I am 85
and I know that I am dying

*It has been disputed that Borges is in fact not the original author of this poem. Some say that the author is the North American poet Nadine Stair. Anyway regardless of who wrote it originally it cannot be denied that it is a cracking poem.
